Halloween Challenge, Day 31! The Creature Within (poem)

Halloween is now here, over soon though I fear,

But before it does go, better I think to show,

What lurks deep within, kind of my evil twin,

The creature I hide, harbor to its dark side,

Now the moon is quite full, this other half makes me whole,

I let out a deep howl, followed by a mean growl,

Better stay off the streets, cause I’ll roam for fresh eats,

Yes a werewolf I be, don’t want to run into me,

Till the moon wanes again, and I’m once more a man!

Arooooooo!

Happy Halloween 2018 Everyone!

Halloween Challenge, Day 30: tap, Tap, TAP! (story)

The rain falling steady outside helped lull me to sleep. The clouds so thick no moon or stars would be making a presence over night. A sweet dream started playing in my mind and I was set for a restful night.

Tap. The sound barely registering in my ears. Tap. As it continued, it brought me awake. I sat up, trying to establish my bearings. I had been in quite a deep sleep. Tap. The window! I peered over from the bed but with the darkness of the night I could see nothing.

Tap. I moved closer to the window hoping to catch a glimpse of the culprit. Tap. I knew that turning on a light would only make matters worse, giving whatever it was out there a clear view inside and me only a look at my reflection. Tap. I crept closer still, coming right up to the window. Tap-tap. Could it see me? Sense my presence? Tap-tap. The rhythm had suddenly changed. Tap-tap.

I placed my hand on the glass close to the source of the sound. Tap-tap! I could feel the vibrations in my hand and still could see nothing hitting the window. Tap-tap. I started turning the locks on the window, preparing to open it. Tap-tap-tap! I could sense the anticipation in this new rhythm. Tap-tap-tap! As soon as the lock was free the window shot open of it’s own accord!

An unseen force pulled me into the open window, tugging at me insidiously, trying to ensure my fall! I threw out my arms to catch the sides, fighting to remain inside. Tap-tap-tap! Like blows to my head, my grip slipped and I tumbled through. As I fell, I thought about how thankful I was to live in a ranch house and that the fall should only bruise a little 😉

Hitting the mud with an ‘umph!’ I pushed myself to my feet, shivering a bit from the cold rain now soaking me. I shook my fist at whatever mean spirit had played this Halloween trick and went back inside. Fortunately the spirit was appeased and left me sleep the rest of the night through. I hope next year it will just ask for a treat!

[The end]

Halloween Challenge, Day 29: Witch’s Brew (poem)

The witch’s brew, a most foul stew,

Concocted for a spell…

What it’ll do, I have no clue,

It wafts a nasty smell…

Disgusting things, like fruit bat wings,

And other creature parts…

The witch, she sings, a raven brings,

Some black and shrivelled hearts…

She stirs in now, an ox and cow,

The mix is really thick…

Another sow, I don’t see how,

It makes me rather sick.

I watched no more, I quit before,

I lost my eaten lunch…

My head was sore, sat on the floor,

Just huddled in a bunch.

Now feel repressed, perhaps I’d best,

End this strange witch tale,

Tight in my chest, must pass this test,

I’d really hate to fail.

This is my entry for Day 29 of the 31 Days of Halloween writing challenge (what’s in the witch’s cauldron) – Sounds like a test to me, “Pop Quiz! What’s she making?” 🙂

It is a great challenge hosted over at Flutter by Literature, be sure to check it out and join in for a big finish!

Halloween Challenge, Day 28: One Bright Day (story)

One bright day, in the middle of the night, as the sun rose over the horizon, I was abruptly awakened by a knock on the door. I looked over at the clock which displayed 3:21 a.m. in bright ominously red numbers. A count down, but to what? And who would be knocking on the door at this hour?!

The bright sunlight flooded into the room through the windows nearly blinding me as I headed to the front door. Why was it so bright in the middle of the night?! Something definitely wasn’t right in the world. I answered the door to find a pumpkin boy standing there acting a little lost. He didn’t speak, and without eyes, I couldn’t tell if he was really looking at me or not. He just stood there expectantly.

“Can I help you?”, I asked.

He nodded and started hopping about excitedly. He pointed to where his mouth should be, scrawling a smile with his fingers, then pointed to me.

“You want me to carve you a mouth?”, I said.

He nodded again.

“OK. Hold on while I get a knife.” I headed to the kitchen and came back a few moments later with a knife in hand.

“Are you a happy kid?”, I asked. He nodded enthusiastically. “OK then, a nice smile for you! Uh, this won’t hurt you will it?”.

He shook his head NO.

I carefully carved him a smile. I had barely finished when he spoke, “Oh thank you, sir! I’ve been wanting to speak since I first came awake!

“Is there anything else I can do for you?”

Yes sir! If it isn’t too much. I would like some eyes so I can see!

“Triangles or moons.”, I asked.

Triangles, please! I don’t think I would feel right with moon eyes.

“Very well. Hold still and we’ll have you seeing in no time.” And so I carved a couple of triangle eyes.

It’s beautiful! The world I mean. So many colors in the trees! And would you look at that bright blue sky!

“Well, that actually has me a little unsettled. See, it’s the middle of the night, the sky should be dark.”

But isn’t it just beautiful! Oh wait, I think I hear my mom calling. Thank you, mister. I have to go!

And with that he took off down the driveway, waving goodbye as he ran, then vanished before reaching the street. Darkness returned fast, the night once again a normal dark, stars glittering in the sky. The sun no longer rising and me standing on my porch in my pajamas in the middle of the night. Awkward!
