Halloween Challenge, Day 30: tap, Tap, TAP! (story)

The rain falling steady outside helped lull me to sleep. The clouds so thick no moon or stars would be making a presence over night. A sweet dream started playing in my mind and I was set for a restful night.

Tap. The sound barely registering in my ears. Tap. As it continued, it brought me awake. I sat up, trying to establish my bearings. I had been in quite a deep sleep. Tap. The window! I peered over from the bed but with the darkness of the night I could see nothing.

Tap. I moved closer to the window hoping to catch a glimpse of the culprit. Tap. I knew that turning on a light would only make matters worse, giving whatever it was out there a clear view inside and me only a look at my reflection. Tap. I crept closer still, coming right up to the window. Tap-tap. Could it see me? Sense my presence? Tap-tap. The rhythm had suddenly changed. Tap-tap.

I placed my hand on the glass close to the source of the sound. Tap-tap! I could feel the vibrations in my hand and still could see nothing hitting the window. Tap-tap. I started turning the locks on the window, preparing to open it. Tap-tap-tap! I could sense the anticipation in this new rhythm. Tap-tap-tap! As soon as the lock was free the window shot open of it’s own accord!

An unseen force pulled me into the open window, tugging at me insidiously, trying to ensure my fall! I threw out my arms to catch the sides, fighting to remain inside. Tap-tap-tap! Like blows to my head, my grip slipped and I tumbled through. As I fell, I thought about how thankful I was to live in a ranch house and that the fall should only bruise a little πŸ˜‰

Hitting the mud with an ‘umph!’ I pushed myself to my feet, shivering a bit from the cold rain now soaking me. I shook my fist at whatever mean spirit had played this Halloween trick and went back inside. Fortunately the spirit was appeased and left me sleep the rest of the night through. I hope next year it will just ask for a treat!
